MetaVR is a public research resource for exploring viral genomes and their diversity. Built on the IMG data warehouse and analysis tools, it provides a collection of uncultivated viral genomes (UViGs) recovered from metagenomic data and serves as the updated successor to IMG/VR-4.0. The platform helps researchers investigate how viruses influence microbial communities, metabolism, ecosystems, nutrient cycles, and health.

Users can browse UViGs, viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs), protein clusters, predicted hosts, viral taxonomy, ecosystem information, and geolocation data. Search options include nucleotide, protein, and structure searches, alongside advanced queries. MetaVR also offers downloads, an API, and statistics to support data exploration and analysis. The site reports 24,435,662 UViGs, 12,705,643 vOTUs, 748,927 protein 3D models, and 383,034 viral protein clusters with at least 100 members. These resources enable researchers to examine viral genomes and related data at scale. By bringing datasets and tools together, MetaVR supports detailed study of viral diversity, including viruses that have not been cultured.
