The Metaphysical Society of America (MSA) is a professional organization of philosophers founded in 1950 and a constituent of the American Council of Learned Societies since 1958. Its purpose is the study of reality, and it brings together scholars to consider fundamental questions across the major areas of philosophy. The Society welcomes a variety of philosophical traditions and methods, fostering discussion of issues that have shaped philosophical debate over time.
The MSA’s central activity is its annual meeting, where members and other participants present and discuss philosophical work. Its 77th annual meeting is scheduled for March 25–27, 2027, at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, with a keynote address by Mark Sinclair of Queen’s University Belfast. The Society offers up to $400 in support to graduate students and eligible recent postdoctoral researchers presenting papers at the conference.
The MSA offers several membership categories, including regular, sustaining, benefactor, student, and emeritus memberships. It has no publication of its own, but maintains an informal relationship with the Review of Metaphysics.
