Metrology of the Abstract (MoA) is an independent conceptual measurement laboratory operated by Metrology of the Abstract, LLC, based in Austin, Texas. It develops methods for inspecting and improving the conceptual instruments people use to reason and make decisions, including definitions, classifications, models, standards, policies, and measurement frameworks. Rather than judging an entire subject or claiming authority over a domain, MoA focuses on the instrument itself and leaves domain expertise and authority with the relevant field.

Its calibration work examines an instrument’s purpose, boundaries, assumptions, uncertainty, drift, and possible failure conditions. MoA documents its findings, preserves a traceable record, and may provide measurements, residuals, reports, and recommendations. Its publications include the five-part Consciousness Floor Series, a proposed framework with stated limits, and the Continuously Calibrated Dictionary. The organization also provides public standards, procedures, and an open laboratory workbench where conceptual instruments can be developed, inspected, and challenged. Public work declares its standing, and self-assessed work remains so unless further evidence supports a change.
