About Virginia Cooperative Extension
Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE), in collaboration with Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia (MGNV), is dedicated to promoting environmentally sound gardening practices and community improvement. MGNV is a group of trained volunteers who work alongside VCE to educate and inspire individuals to adopt sustainable gardening practices. To become certified Extension Master Gardeners, MGNV members undergo extensive training in both classroom and field settings, accumulating over 60 hours of combined training.
They also complete a minimum of 60 hours of volunteer work as interns. Ongoing volunteer work and continuing education are required to maintain their certification. MGNV, through VCE, actively contributes to community education programs, showcasing various plants that thrive in the region through seven demonstration gardens.
They offer plant clinics at farmers' markets, libraries, and special events, providing invaluable gardening advice to the public. Additionally, they offer workshops on topics like container gardening, composting, and lawn care. MGNV also supports horticultural therapy and schoolyard gardening projects, addressing diverse community needs.
