About MHS
The Manitoba Historical Society (MHS), established in 1879, stands as the oldest organization in Western Canada and the second-oldest in all of Canada, dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Manitoba's rich history. As a registered public charity independent of the Government of Manitoba, MHS upholds its founders' legacy through advocacy, research, education, and community engagement. MHS offers a variety of products and services, including access to extensive archives, publications such as the magazine Prairie History, and an informative website featuring over 30,000 pages on historical topics.
They organize field trips, films, lectures, and multicultural events that connect Manitobans with their heritage. Additionally, MHS is committed to addressing Indigenous histories and advancing reconciliation, recognizing the ongoing contributions of Indigenous communities to the province's narrative. By becoming a member or donating, individuals can support MHS's vital mission of keeping history alive for future generations
