The Steam Railroading Institute is a brand dedicated to preserving and educating the public about steam-era railroading in Michigan and the Great Lakes Region. Their mission is to maintain the skills and technology necessary for operating steam locomotives and provide authentic steam locomotive experiences for enthusiasts. The brand's journey began with the retirement of Pere Marquette 1225, a significant steam locomotive.

Donated to Michigan State University in 1957, it later caught the attention of a group of students who formed the Michigan State University Railroad Club. Their goal was to restore the locomotive and use it to power excursion trains for football games. This led to the establishment of the Michigan State Trust for Railway Preservation Incorporated, a non-profit organization, in 1979.

Since then, the Institute has been dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of Pere Marquette 1225, which has been in operable condition since 1988. It serves as the centerpiece of their collection and represents the commitment to keeping steam alive.
