About Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado
Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado is an organization dedicated to the conservation of the golden lion tamarin, a species at the brink of extinction. Originally on the verge of extinction in the 1970s, these charismatic primates now thrive in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, the only natural nursery for these endangered creatures. However, the threats to their survival persist.
The association plays a pivotal role in coordinating conservation efforts to increase the population of golden lion tamarins in their natural habitat. Their actions encompass various initiatives, including strategic planning, population management, habitat restoration, and fostering environmental education. Some of their notable projects involve reintroducing epiphytes, a vital plant species for the tamarin's survival, and collaborating with the local community, particularly farmers in agrarian settlements, to promote sustainable agriculture.
They also monitor the tamarin populations, translocating individuals to prevent inbreeding in small, isolated forest fragments. Through their tireless endeavors, the population of golden lion tamarins has rebounded, with an estimated 4,800 individuals. Join Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado in their mission to protect these remarkable creatures and their precious habitat
