Middletown Historical Society

Middletown Historical Society is a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to safeguarding, researching, and documenting the history of Middletown, Rhode Island. Guided by its aim to preserve the past and inspire the future, the Society maintains several historic sites as distinctive museums: Paradise School, Witherbee School, and Boyd’s Mill. These locations offer visitors opportunities to connect with the town’s heritage and learn about its historic buildings and places.

The Society also shares local history through news, informational resources, and events. Its programs include special activities at Witherbee School exploring Middletown’s role during the Revolutionary War, as well as the annual Running of the Mill at Boyd’s Mill. At this event, the historic windmill’s eight vanes and sails turn, accompanied by arts and crafts vendors and family entertainment. The Society welcomes volunteers to help at its properties and invites people to become members. Memberships support the upkeep of historic sites, new discoveries, preservation efforts, and educational events. Donations and community participation help sustain the Society’s work.
