Midwest Herbaria is a brand dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich plant biodiversity of the Midwest region in the United States. With a focus on the Great Lakes drainage basin, this brand covers the six states that border the western Great Lakes: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. They collaborate with 132 herbaria listed in Index Herbariorum to make data available from a majority of those collections.
The Midwest region boasts diverse plant species and communities, ranging from boreal forests to prairies, bogs, and fens. These habitats coexist within a landscape that has been significantly influenced by agricultural and industrial activities. The Great Lakes basin itself holds 84% of North American surface fresh water and is home to 16% of the US population.
Through their website, Midwest Herbaria offers a wide range of interactive tools and resources for plant enthusiasts. Users can explore the comprehensive specimen search, browse collections, and utilize dynamic checklists and keys. Whether you're a seasoned botanist or simply curious about the flora in the Midwest, Midwest Herbaria is your go-to resource for knowledge and information about the region's plant life
