About Minor Planet Center
The International Astronomical Union Minor Planet Center (MPC) is the global hub for astrometric observations and orbits of minor planets (asteroids) and comets. As the official body designated by the IAU, the MPC manages the receipt and distribution of positional measurements, identifies and designates celestial objects, and computes their orbits. This vital work is carried out at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory by a dedicated team led by experienced professionals such as Matthew Payne, Mike Rudenko, Peter Veres, David Bell, Paresh Prema, Margaret Pan, Rosemary Pike, Federica Spoto, Mike Alexandersen, and Chris Moriarty.
With a focus on research, data processing, and public outreach, the MPC offers a vast array of services including NEO confirmation, comet detection, and orbit computations. The MPC's commitment to advancing our understanding of the solar system is supported by NASA funding, ensuring the continued success of their essential work in the field of astronomy
