Mission Belle Stichting B-17G Memorial is a Dutch foundation dedicated to preserving the history of the American B-17G bomber known as Mission Belle and commemorating its crew. The aircraft, serial number 42-31097, belonged to the 381st Bombardment Group and crashed in the Lek River between Nieuw-Lekkerland and Streefkerk on December 1, 1943. Established in 2016, the foundation set out to create a memorial near the crash site.
The monument was unveiled on September 29, 2018, and depicts the aircraft’s emergency landing while honoring the crew, including the three members who died. The foundation’s board works to maintain the memorial, its directional signs, and the website, while keeping the story alive through research and remembrance. It offers the book We Knew It Would Be a Long Day, which recounts the aircraft and crew’s story and includes historical photographs and material about the memorial.
The book is available through local outlets and by contacting the foundation. Supporters can also become friends of Mission Belle for €10 per year, helping sustain its work
