About Mitaanjigamiing First Nation | Fort Frances ON
Mitaanjigamiing First Nation is a brand that offers a range of programs and services to its community members. With a custom electoral system of government, the First Nation is represented by Chief Janice Henderson and two Councillors, Roy Morrison and Darlene Whitecrow, who form the Council. Their term lasts for two years.
Mitaanjigamiing First Nation has a rich history that dates back to the signing of Treaty #3 in 1873 between the First Nation and the Crown. The terms of the treaty provided the community with farmland and wildland reserves. Over the years, the First Nation has undergone changes, including a relocation and the establishment of a new band office.
In 2009, the First Nation changed its name from Stanjikomiing First Nation to Mitaanjigamiing First Nation, which means Where a smaller lake flows into a bigger lake. This decision was made to honor the Ojibway language and local place names. Mitaanjigamiing First Nation offers a variety of services, including finance and administration, education, economic development, social services, health services, maintenance and operations, and recreation.
Their dedicated staff members work diligently to support and serve the community. Operating from Monday to Friday, the First Nation welcomes visitors and aims to provide a cohesive and thriving community for its members
