The Movement for Justice and Reconciliation (MJR) is a UK registered charity working to address the lasting effects of colonial slavery and industrial exploitation in British society. It brings together researchers, educators and community leaders to explore this history and support reconciliation through research, education and community action.
MJR partners with academic and other organisations to find, collate and publish research. Its educational work includes resources for schools, training for church and community leaders, and exhibitions that build public understanding. The organisation also works with churches, particularly in deprived areas, on reconciliation projects and community initiatives intended to strengthen life skills and employment opportunities.
Among its featured projects is After the Flood: The Church, Slavery and Reconciliation, a 67-minute documentary examining the Church’s involvement in chattel slavery, how that involvement was justified, and its continuing significance for Christian reconciliation. MJR also offers free hire of an exhibition on colonial slavery and its legacy. The exhibition includes eight information panels and an interactive desk, with a digital version also available.
