The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is dedicated to protecting the health of the environment and community by effectively managing stormwater and wastewater in the Greater Milwaukee area. Established to enhance sustainability and resilience, MMSD operates two advanced water reclamation facilities, which serve 29 communities and a population of approximately 1.1 million. With a commitment to eco-friendly practices, MMSD has successfully captured and cleaned 98.6% of all incoming water since 1994.

MMSD offers a range of services, including rain gauge monitoring, wastewater treatment, and education on green infrastructure like rain barrels and gardens. They prioritize flood management and the reduction of sewage overflows, now averaging only two annually compared to previous years. Their innovative Deep Tunnel system has effectively prevented over 160 billion gallons of pollution from entering Lake Michigan. By engaging the community with programs such as Fresh Coast Guardians and public tours, MMSD aims to foster environmental stewardship while ensuring clean and safe water for future generations.
