Minnesota Then is a free, location-based digital history museum that helps people experience Minnesota’s past at the places where it happened. Its mobile web app uses a phone’s GPS to unlock historical exhibits when visitors arrive at marked coordinates, connecting stories directly to the landscapes and landmarks around them. There is no app to download and no subscription required: users open the interactive map in a smartphone browser, choose a site, and travel there to explore.
At each location, visitors can read historical accounts, view archival photographs, and listen to an audio docent. Featured markers include the memorial to Twin Cities hip-hop artist Micheal “Eyedea” Larsen in St. Paul, the site of the 1876 Northfield bank raid, and the St. Croix Boom Site, where logging helped shape the state’s industry. The website also offers a blog with longer articles on Minnesota people, events, and industries, alongside project resources and support options. Minnesota Then is free to use and invites readers to support its continued growth through reader contributions.
