Moabi Initiative

Moabi is a collaborative mapping platform that uses technology and partnerships to monitor natural resources and land-use planning, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Named after the Moabi tree, the organization works with local and international partners to promote transparency and accountability in the natural resource sector. Its mapping tools help users create, share, and explore open map data, including information on logging, forest carbon projects, palm oil, mining, and related land uses.

Moabi’s projects include mapping logging roads across the Congo Basin through crowdsourcing, supporting REDD+ safeguards, and documenting mining operations and contracts in the DRC. The platform also supports community mapping, including participatory efforts with Indigenous communities to record local resources. Its work combines geospatial technology with on-the-ground collaboration, adapting methods to regions with limited infrastructure and resources. Through project partnerships, training, and shared mapping tools, Moabi helps communities, researchers, and organizations make natural resource information more accessible and useful for monitoring environmental and social impacts.
