Museum of Furniture Studies is a forthcoming museum in Älmhult, Sweden, dedicated to furniture design. Scheduled to open in February 2027, it aims to connect the history of furniture, contemporary design and the next generation of designers in an engaging destination for anyone curious about the field. Its open collection is intended to make furniture design accessible for learning and fresh perspectives, while bringing students, emerging designers and the wider design community together to exchange ideas and discuss design heritage and future directions.
The museum grew from Swedish architects and designers Kersti Sandin and Lars Bülow’s private collection, built over many years and comprising more than 1,200 pieces by over 400 designers and architects from around the world. Its new home is a former IKEA warehouse in Älmhult, being transformed with the involvement of Danish architecture studio Cobe while retaining much of the building’s industrial character.
Alongside its collection, the museum supports emerging talent through Ex-Works, an initiative connecting design students with the Swedish furniture industry.
