Modern States has partnered with edX, an online learning platform founded by Harvard and MIT, to develop over 30 freshman college courses taught by renowned universities and professors. Each course includes online lectures, quizzes, tests, and other features. All textbooks and materials are provided online at no charge.

These courses are designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement (AP) or College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests offered by the College Board. By passing these exams, students can earn college credits, equivalent to a full year's worth, at traditional colleges and universities. Modern States aims to make education accessible to all, regardless of age, location, income, or prior credits.

It serves as a global digital public library of exceptional college courses and welcomes anyone seeking knowledge. While recognizing the value of a traditional four-year university experience, Modern States acknowledges that it may be financially unattainable for many individuals. The organization seeks to bridge that gap and offers links to tutoring, mentoring, and college advising groups.

Modern States was founded and initially funded by businessman and philanthropist Steve Klinsky and has since gained the support of other education and foundation leaders.
