Monahan Martial Arts is a full-time martial arts center in Winona, Minnesota, serving students of all experience levels. Founded by Sensei Ralph Monahan in 1993, the dojo grew from his teaching at the local YMCA, which began in 1983, and is described as Winona’s longest-running full-time martial arts center. Its classes include karate, kickboxing, jiu jitsu, and women-taught self-defense, with instruction for beginners and experienced students alike.
The school’s approach emphasizes the connection between mind, body, and spirit, while encouraging respect, discipline, patience, and perseverance. Owner and head instructor Ralph Monahan holds black belts in Tae Kwon-Do and karate and is completing his blue belt in jiu jitsu. Instructor Matthew Monahan teaches private kickboxing lessons and holds a karate black belt; instructor Amy Torbenson is a jiu jitsu blue belt with a passion for self-defense.
