About Monica Marie White
Monica M. White, Ph.D., known as the Black Farmers’ Historian, is a scholar and author whose work explores the role of agriculture in African American history and struggles for freedom. Her website introduces her biography, teaching, lectures, media presence, and contact information, while highlighting her book, Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom Movement.
The book examines the people, ideas, and organizing that have kept agriculture connected to African American emancipation, civil rights, human rights, and self-determination. Drawing on archival research and ethnography, it presents Black agrarian experience not only through the lens of oppression, but also as a strategic practice of resistance and liberation. The site features endorsements describing the book as a richly researched and engaging study, and offers visitors a way to learn more and get a copy.
Through her scholarship, writing, teaching, and lectures, White brings attention to Black farmers and the historical significance of collective agricultural action. Her work connects past movements with ongoing conversations about freedom, community, and self-determination.
