Nationales Monitoringzentrum zur Biodiversität

The National Monitoring Centre for Biodiversity (NMZB) is a German public-sector initiative hosted by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation in Leipzig. It serves as a central information and coordination hub for biodiversity monitoring across Germany. Its purpose is to bring together monitoring stakeholders from research and practical fieldwork, strengthen collaboration, and support the long-term development of nationwide monitoring.

The centre’s website provides extensive information about biodiversity monitoring, relevant organizations and activities, as well as existing programmes, surveys and research initiatives. Programme profiles outline objectives, methods, locations, data availability and opportunities to participate; separate project profiles cover projects receiving centre support. The NMZB also offers information on biodiversity pressures, soil biodiversity, data management and monitoring frameworks. It promotes knowledge exchange through events, online talks and networking formats, and supports monitoring development through targeted project funding. Its committees bring together specialist expertise and representation from the monitoring community. The online portal is being expanded as a comprehensive resource for biodiversity monitoring in Germany.
