About Mono Lake Committee
Mono Lake Committee is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of Mono Lake, an ancient saline lake located at the eastern edge of California. This unique ecosystem covers over 70 square miles and is home to a diverse range of species. Trillions of brine shrimp and alkali flies populate the lake, while millions of birds rely on it for survival.
Along the lakeshore, visitors can marvel at the captivating tufa towers, limestone formations that rise from the water's surface. The Mono Basin, which surrounds the lake, has a rich human history that dates back thousands of years to the Kutzadika'a Paiute, the native people of the land. The organization has been at the forefront of efforts to protect Mono Lake from excessive water diversions, ensuring its sustainability for future generations.
