The Montgomery Advertiser has a rich history that dates back to the presidency of Andrew Jackson. Established in 1829 as The Planter's Gazette, it later became the leading newspaper of the Confederate states during the Civil War. Under the leadership of Major William Wallace Screws, a Confederate veteran, the publication gained editorial prominence in Alabama.

In 1903, R. F. Hudson joined the staff and helped lead the paper to financial success, eventually acquiring it in 1935.

In 1940, the paper relocated to Washington Avenue, and in 1963, it was purchased by Carmage Walls, leading to further improvements. The Montgomery Advertiser has achieved great recognition, with more Pulitzer Prizes than any other newspaper in Alabama, covering important topics such as the fight against the Ku Klux Klan and investigating infant mortality. As part of the Gannett Corporation since 1995, the newspaper has also earned the prestigious International Newspaper Color Quality Club Award.
