Moonlight is a community-run, open-source project that lets people stream PC games to a wide range of devices, whether they are at home or away from their gaming computer. Formerly known as Limelight, it implements NVIDIA’s GameStream protocol through third-party client software. Users can play games from their existing PC collection remotely, or stream other content, including the full Windows desktop.
Moonlight offers streaming at up to 4K with HDR on capable clients and supports up to 120 frames per second through its PC client. It can also be used to create a personal cloud-gaming setup, with hosting options that include port forwarding, IPv6, and virtual networking tools. Clients are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Apple TV, ChromeOS, Raspberry Pi, and other platforms; community ports support devices such as Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and smart TVs. Sunshine is the recommended open-source host, while Wolf supports streaming applications in Docker containers. Moonlight is free, has no subscriptions or advertising, and welcomes contributions.
