Moritz Fire Lab is a research and extension group focused on understanding wildfire and supporting informed decisions in fire-prone landscapes. Its research examines fire regime dynamics at broad scales and plant flammability at finer scales, bringing together perspectives on how fire interacts with ecosystems. Lab members, including students and staff, work on a range of fire-related projects and conduct both field research and laboratory analyses.
The lab’s extension work applies research findings to planning, management, and policy. It is led by Max Moritz, a Wildfire Specialist with University of California Cooperative Extension, part of the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources Division. The lab is managed from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where Moritz is an adjunct professor at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management and is affiliated with the Earth Research Institute and the Wildfire Resilience Initiative.
Moritz Fire Lab shares its work through publications, updates, and outreach.
