Mountain State Spotlight is an independent, civic news organization dedicated to improving West Virginia by producing impactful journalism that exposes abuses of power by government, business, and other institutions. With a mission of sustained outrage, they aim to bring attention to critical issues such as the state's struggling economy, educational system, failing infrastructure, and troubled public health system. Taking inspiration from the late W.
E. Ned Chilton III, publisher of the Charleston Gazette, Mountain State Spotlight promises to return to stories of injustice, needlessly harmed individuals, and abuses of power until reforms are made. Their stories don't shy away from the truth and are accessible to all, as they believe that every West Virginian has the right to the information needed to make a difference in their communities.
As a nonprofit newsroom, Mountain State Spotlight relies on support from foundations and individual donors. They prioritize accountability to their readers and ensure that their stories will always be free to access. If you're passionate about West Virginia and want to help make a difference, consider supporting Mountain State Spotlight with your donations.
They value the input of their readers, so reach out to them with any story ideas you may have
