The Great Bear Sea Marine Protected Area (MPA) Network is a conservation initiative in British Columbia’s Northern Shelf Bioregion, created to care for the ocean and support the people and communities who depend on it. Co-developed and collaboratively governed by 17 coastal First Nations, the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada, the network brings together partners to protect a healthy, prosperous ocean. It builds on existing conservation efforts and covers 30% of the Great Bear Sea, also known as the Northern Shelf Bioregion.
The network’s work includes establishing protected areas, monitoring ecological conditions, supporting collaborative planning and sharing information about benefits and impacts. Its six goals include protecting biodiversity, fishery resources, habitats, traditional uses and cultural heritage, while contributing to social, community and economic stability. It also aims to support tourism and recreation, and create opportunities for scientific research, education and public awareness. Through reports, news, educational resources and public engagement, the network keeps coastal communities and other stakeholders informed about its planning and implementation.
