About MRC
The Mekong River Commission (MRC) is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1995 under the Mekong Agreement between Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam. It supports regional dialogue and cooperation across the Lower Mekong River Basin, serving as a platform for water diplomacy and a hub for knowledge on water resources management and sustainable development.
The MRC helps member countries plan and manage the basin using principles of Integrated Water Resources Management. Its work includes technical assistance, strategic advice, research and practical solutions related to fisheries, agriculture and irrigation, navigation, hydropower, climate change, floods and droughts, and ecosystem conservation. It monitors hydrometeorological conditions, sediment, water quality, ecological health, fisheries and socioeconomic trends, and provides data systems, modelling, assessments, basin planning, and flood and drought forecasting.
The organisation also supports consultation and stakeholder engagement, dialogue and partnerships, and regional governance processes. Through its publications, news, events and online resources—including data and forecasting websites—the MRC shares information and invites participation in discussions about the Mekong’s future.
