Monticello Railway Museum | Monticello IL

Monticello Railway Museum, located in Monticello, Illinois, has a rich history in preserving and showcasing steam locomotives. The museum's origins can be traced back to 1966 when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad decided to discontinue its steam train excursion program. In an effort to save the program, a group of three rail enthusiasts formed the Society for the Perpetuation of Unretired Railfans (SPUR) and attempted to persuade the railroad management to continue the program.

Although their efforts were unsuccessful, SPUR shifted their focus to owning and operating their own steam locomotive and excursions. Over the years, the museum has acquired several steam locomotives, including a 0-4-0 switch engine and a 2-8-0 locomotive, which are meticulously restored and maintained by passionate volunteers. The museum also boasts a diverse collection of passenger equipment, cabooses, freight equipment, and maintenance of way vehicles, showcasing the rich history of rail transportation.

Visitors to Monticello Railway Museum can enjoy train rides on their fully operational steam locomotives, explore the downtown Monticello collection, and participate in various events and excursions. The museum also offers charter train services for special occasions and has a gift shop where visitors can purchase train-related merchandise. Monticello Railway Museum invites you to step back in time and experience the magic of steam locomotives and the fascinating world of rail transportation
