The Michigan State University Horse Teaching and Research Center (HTRC) is a premier equine facility situated just four miles from the MSU campus, dedicated to the education and research of horse management. Established in 1855, the center has a rich history of breeding high-quality purebred horses, including Arabians, Belgians, Percherons, and Quarter Horses. The HTRC serves as the primary venue for various equine classes in the Animal Science and Horse Management programs, catering to both undergraduate students and community members through extension programs.
Spanning 100 acres, the facility features a show/training barn, indoor arena, reproduction barn, and quarantine barns, equipped to support diverse breeding and training activities. Annual student-run horse auctions highlight the practical learning experiences available at HTRC, allowing students to engage in all facets of equine marketing. Managed by Paula Hitzler, the center combines expert knowledge with hands-on training, positioning itself as a leader in fostering the next generation of equine professionals.
