Challenge Financial barriers cause millions of adults and children in Sub-saharan Africa to suffer from inadequate access to healthcare. Despite a global initiative to achieve universal health coverage by 2030, out-of-pocket payments remain the primary method of covering health expenses in the region. This pushes an estimated 20 million people in sub-Saharan Africa into extreme poverty every year. Mission We believe in equitable access to quality healthcare. Therefore, our mission is to build and implement technology that lowers financial barriers to healthcare and accelerates progress towards universal health coverage. Solution We developed mTOMADY so that anyone, anywhere can access essential health services free from financial risk. mTOMADY is a multi-player platform that connects beneficiaries to different health financing mechanisms. A simple SIM card enables users to enroll in public or private health programs, and send, save, or spend money for health-specific expenses.

About mTOMADY
Their mission is to develop and implement innovative technology solutions that reduce financial barriers to healthcare, ultimately leading to Universal Health Coverage (UHC). They envision a world where everyone, regardless of their location or financial status, can receive quality healthcare without facing financial hardship. Originally, mTOMADY was established as a project of Doctors for Madagascar (DfM), a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving healthcare access and equity in Madagascar.
Recognizing the potential of mobile communication and payment technology, mTOMADY harnessed this momentum by creating a digital health project in 2019. Initially, their project focused on providing pregnant women and young mothers with access to mobile health wallets and digital vouchers for subsidized care. Since then, mTOMADY has gained widespread recognition and attracted partners interested in addressing healthcare financing challenges and advancing universal health coverage.
In 2020, mTOMADY became an independent social enterprise committed to realizing their vision not only in Madagascar but also beyond. With a dedicated team of doctors, engineers, and economic experts collaborating between Berlin, Germany and Antananarivo, Madagascar, mTOMADY successfully launched their innovative healthcare solutions. Their continued efforts are driven by a passion for making a positive impact on global healthcare accessibility.
