Montana Place Names is a comprehensive project dedicated to exploring the rich tapestry of Montana's geographical and historical identity. This initiative, curated by a team of historians from the Montana Historical Society, serves as a valuable resource for both residents and visitors eager to understand the origins and significance of over 1,100 place names throughout the state. The guidebook traces the evolution of these names, reflecting the interplay of Native American heritage and European settlement, and highlights key geographical features such as rivers, mountain ranges, and historic sites.

The accompanying website, managed by the Montana State Library's Natural Resource Information System, enhances the guide by offering an interactive map and a platform for community engagement, allowing users to submit their insights and corrections. This collaborative effort not only preserves history but also fosters a shared connection among Montanans. Whether you're delving into the depths of Montana's past or planning your next adventure, Montana Place Names provides an enriching exploration of the stories that shape this majestic landscape.
