About Mt Ruapehu
Mount Ruapehu is a mountain destination in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island, within Tongariro National Park, a Dual World Heritage area. Its two ski areas, Whakapapa on the northern slopes and Tūroa on the southern slopes, offer winter experiences across terrain shaped by solidified lava. Visitors can ski and snowboard, with options ranging from learner-friendly runs to more challenging freeride terrain.
Whakapapa spans 550 hectares and has 12 lifts, serving long, gentle learner slopes as well as expansive freeride areas. Tūroa covers 500 hectares and features New Zealand’s highest lifted point and biggest vertical. Together, the areas offer varied mountain terrain for different abilities and ambitions.
In summer, Whakapapa welcomes visitors for sightseeing aboard the Sky Waka gondola, food and beverage options, and marked walks. Tūroa is working toward a summer offering, with food and beverage options and activities in development. Mount Ruapehu’s website provides information about both areas to help visitors explore the mountain and plan a seasonal visit.
