Mukurtu is a grassroots initiative focused on empowering communities to effectively manage and share their digital cultural heritage while honoring their unique traditions and values. Founded in collaboration with the Warumungu community in 2007, Mukurtu—meaning 'dilly bag' or a safe space for sacred materials—provides an open-source platform tailored for Indigenous and other communities.
At the core of Mukurtu CMS are features such as Traditional Knowledge (TK) Labels, which enable the tagging of third-party materials with culturally relevant usage terms, and customizable cultural protocols that allow for tiered access to digital heritage based on community needs. This fosters an inclusive environment for storytelling and cultural expression, accommodating multiple narratives associated with each digital item.
Mukurtu also ensures the integrity of digital assets through its Roundtrip feature, which allows for the secure import and export of media while preserving metadata. Funded by notable organizations like the National Endowment for the Humanities, Mukurtu continues to evolve, driven by community feedback and collaboration.
