Ladj Ly is an acclaimed French director of Malian descent, celebrated for his compelling cinematic portrayals of marginalized communities. His latest film, “Nedoriții. Blocul 5 nu se predă / Bâtiment 5,” premieres on July 19, distributed by Independența Film.

This provocative work explores themes of courage and social justice, focusing on the political and social integration challenges faced in contemporary France. Ly's narrative centers on a conflict between Pierre, a pediatrician turned mayor, and Haby, a community activist, over the fate of a social housing block threatened with demolition. The film, part of a trilogy depicting life in Parisian suburbs, reflects Ly's own experiences and includes over 80% local extras, lending authenticity to its portrayal of urban struggles with immigration and societal inequality.
