MITAG, the Italian War History Museum, is a cultural institution based in Rovereto, Italy, where it has been documenting the impact of war on people, societies and territories since 1921. Housed in a fifteenth-century Venetian fortress, the museum brings together historical collections and the story of the castle, with underground passages, towers, gun emplacements and panoramic terraces open to visitors. Its exhibitions explore conflicts from the nineteenth century to the present, with particular attention to the First World War and the experiences of those who lived through it.
The collections include objects, photographs, documents, weapons and personal accounts; a dedicated display in former air-raid shelter galleries features more than 40 First World War artillery pieces. MITAG also maintains a library of over 45,000 books and pamphlets, an archive, and historical research resources. Its public activities include temporary exhibitions, guided tours, events, school programmes, workshops and teacher training.
