About Museu Nacional dos Coches
The Museu Nacional dos Coches in Lisbon is a public museum dedicated to preserving, researching and sharing Portugal’s heritage of ceremonial and historic vehicles. Founded in 1905 by Queen D. Amélia, it holds one of the world’s most important collections of gala carriages, with more than 70 historic vehicles spanning four centuries and originating from over seven countries. Its collection also includes items such as harnesses, ceremonial accessories and other objects connected with carriage history.
The museum brings together two spaces: its contemporary building on Avenida da Índia, opened in 2015 and designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, and the historic Picadeiro Real. Visitors can explore the collection, attend temporary exhibitions, join guided tours and participate in events, including monthly automobile gatherings. The museum also offers virtual visits and visitor-planning information, with tickets available through its official website. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., it is closed on Mondays. Its work includes conservation, restoration, education and public engagement.
