Museum aan de A is a history museum in Groningen, the successor to the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum. Its focus has broadened from northern maritime history to the stories of the city and province, told through the lives of ordinary and remarkable Groningers. The museum explores achievements and difficult chapters alike, including the 1672 victory of Rabenhaupt, Groningen’s involvement in slavery, pioneering women, and portraits from areas affected by earthquakes. Maritime history remains part of its story, reflecting the importance of shipping to Groningen.
The museum is currently closed while it prepares for renovation and a new presentation, so its collection and exhibitions are not on view at the museum building. Visitors can still join exhibitions and events in the city, aboard the museum ship, and elsewhere in the province, and take a virtual tour. Its public programme includes activities, workshops, theatre, dance, music, and lectures, developed with partners and visitors. The museum also works with cultural and educational organisations, including the Groninger Museum, the Groninger Archives, and Noorderpoort.
