The Museum Data Service (MDS) is a free UK-wide initiative that brings together information about museum collections and object records. Its aim is to connect and share records from museums of all sizes, making collection information easier to discover and use. Visitors can explore summaries describing the scope and strengths of collections across the country, or search millions of object records already available through the service. The database is intended to grow over time, with the long-term goal of gathering records from all UK museums.
MDS also supports museums and museum-like collections in sharing their data. Museums can provide information in any format and choose whether records are openly available, restricted to particular users, or held securely as a confidential backup. Data use is subject to licensing and any restrictions set by the source museums. The service is a joint initiative by Art UK, Collections Trust and the University of Leicester, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Bloomberg Philanthropies.
