MusicBrainz is an open-source encyclopedia of music information, maintained by a community of passionate music enthusiasts. It offers a platform for anyone to contribute information about their favorite artists and their works. Unlike other platforms that commercialize user-generated data, MusicBrainz remains free and accessible to all.

Founded by Robert Kaye as a response to the commercialization of the CDDB project by Gracenote, MusicBrainz has grown from a one-man operation into an international community. Its scope has expanded from being a CDDB replacement to becoming a comprehensive music encyclopedia that aims to collect information about all types of music, regardless of popularity, genre, or origin. The MusicBrainz Database stores a vast collection of music information, including artists, releases, composers, and more.

While it does not store music recordings, it is a valuable resource for digital music collectors, developers, and commercial users. MusicBrainz Picard helps users tag their digital music files, and developer resources are available for utilizing the data. Commercial licensing options are also available for those interested.

Operated by the MetaBrainz Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of MusicBrainz as a free and open-source platform, MusicBrainz invites donations to support further growth and development
