About Makerere University Walter Reed Program
MUWRP, the Makerere University Walter Reed Project, was established in 2002 with a focus on HIV vaccine development and testing capabilities in Uganda. It is one of five international research sites under the Department of Defense United States HIV Research Program, based at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Located in Kampala, MUWRP collaborates with Makerere University and the Henry M Jackson Foundation for infrastructure development and research studies on HIV and other diseases.
Beyond HIV research, MUWRP expanded its scope to address communicable disease threats, collaborating on programs such as Avian Influenza surveillance. The project also supports clinical trials for therapeutic medical countermeasures during outbreak events. MUWRP, a non-profit partnership, ensures quality care and treatment, including ARVs, through PEPFAR funding.
With a strong focus on research, collaboration, and community engagement, MUWRP stands at the forefront of infectious disease prevention and response in Uganda
