About MWRD
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) is an award-winning, special-purpose district that is dedicated to managing stormwater, cleaning wastewater, and recovering valuable resources. Created in 1889 to protect Lake Michigan and ensure the health and safety of citizens and waterways, the MWRD serves 5. 19 million residents across 128 suburban communities in Cook County.
With a service area encompassing 882. 1 square miles, including Chicago, the MWRD treats wastewater and provides stormwater management on a daily basis for approximately 12. 72 million people.
Notable achievements include reversing the flow of the Chicago and Calumet River Systems, constructing the North Shore Channel, and implementing the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan, also known as TARP or Deep Tunnel.
