About MYCEL Inc.
MYCEL Inc. Through biomimicry, MYCEL designs biological processes that prioritize recovery and circulation, and develops and produces various bio-based materials. Going beyond sustainability and innovation, MYCEL aims to transition from a degenerative system to a regenerative system that positively impacts the earth's ecosystem, including humans.
By connecting waste materials from different sectors in a closed loop, regenerative systems achieve extreme resource efficiency by utilizing them as new resources. MYCEL believes in using mold and mushroom fungi to decompose and repurpose plastic and industrial waste within the natural cycle. The company is committed to research and development in this field.
With a focus on fungi-biomimicry-natural capitalism, MYCEL's core philosophy is to achieve a sustainable circular economy model through the use of mold and mushroom-based bio-processes. These processes transform urban waste into circular resources that enrich natural capital. MYCEL possesses and manages over 430 unique strains of mushroom fungi and 10 edible strains of mold fungi.
They aim to modify or improve these strains through crossbreeding, mutation, and gene editing (CRISPR) to suit various industrial applications. MYCEL employs culture techniques that involve controlling environmental variables such as CO2, light, humidity, O2, and air flow to alter the microstructures and composition of fungi, regulating material strength and nutritional content. They also design suitable culture compositions for fungi growth, improving their growth rate and inducing the production of high-value byproducts during the cultivation process.
MYCEL's goal is to establish a smart factory by 2022 for mold and mushroom-based material production. This involves developing a modular, precision-controlled multi-purpose culturing device and a smart factory process based on collaborative robots. The company expects productivity improvements and the ability to achieve mass production through these bio-processes.
Furthermore, MYCEL is focused on the development of materialization techniques for utilizing mycelium and various industrial byproducts generated through bio-processes. With researchers from diverse academic backgrounds in chemistry, biochemistry, mechanical engineering, and equipment engineering, MYCEL aims to develop technologies for utilizing mycelium and culturing byproducts as materials. The mission of MYCEL is to stimulate the imagination of customers with their technology, fostering responsibility and courage for change in future generations, all living organisms excluding humans, and marginalized communities.
Together with their customers, MYCEL seeks to create a monumental movement towards a sustainable regenerative system. MYCEL's headquarters are located in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, and their Seoul office is located in Gangnam-gu. They can be contacted via email at contact@mycelproject.
