About National Association of Friendship Centres
The National Association of Friendship Centres (NAFC) was established in 1972 as the central representative body for the Friendship Centre Movement (FCM), a national network of Indigenous-owned and operated community hubs across Canada. With over 100 Friendship Centres and Provincial/Territorial Associations (PTAs) as its members, the NAFC advocates for the concerns of Friendship Centres and PTAs, providing important urban Indigenous perspectives to governments and civil society organizations. The NAFC's mission is to support Friendship Centres and PTAs in achieving their diverse missions and visions within their urban Indigenous communities.
They aim to improve the well-being of Indigenous people living in urban environments by celebrating their cultures and embracing their traditions. The NAFC has a ten-year strategic plan, developed in 2019-2020, that focuses on amplifying the work of the FCM and advocating for the success of its membership. Today, the FCM includes 125 active Friendship Centres and 7 PTAs, reaching millions of people across Canada.
Friendship Centres play a crucial role in responding to the needs of urban Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they demonstrated a heroic collective response by swiftly supporting those in need.
