The National Assessment Governing Board is an independent, nonpartisan organization that sets policy and provides oversight for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), widely known as the Nation’s Report Card. NAEP offers a common measure of what students across the United States know and can do, helping leaders and communities understand how educational systems are serving students. Assessments cover subjects including mathematics, reading, science, civics, U.S. history, and writing, with results reported at national, state, and participating district levels.
The Board’s work includes establishing assessment frameworks and achievement levels, setting assessment and release schedules, and guiding efforts to modernize NAEP. It publishes reports, research, infographics, and multimedia, and provides interactive tools for exploring student achievement trends and changes over time. The organization also shares news, hosts quarterly Board meetings, and offers information about its members, policies, and opportunities to join the Board. Its resources support informed discussion and decision-making about education, student learning, and academic progress.
