The Nairobi Convention is a regional treaty that aims to protect, manage, and develop the Western Indian Ocean. With a focus on achieving a prosperous Western Indian Ocean region, the Convention brings together governments, civil society, and the private sector. It administers various protocols and decisions, including the Conference of Parties (COPs), which serves as the decision-making forum for continued protection, management, and development of the Western Indian Ocean.

The Convention is committed to preventing pollution, ensuring sound environmental management, and achieving effective long-term ecosystem management. Through projects like NoCaMo, ACP MEAs, and SAPPHIRE, the Convention works towards the integrated management of marine and coastal resources, capacity building, and policy harmonization. The participating countries include Comoros, France, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania, and the Republic of South Africa.
