Naked Angels is a renowned and unconventional brand that has been a driving force in the theater industry for over 35 years. Founded in 1986 by a group of artists, Naked Angels aimed to provide a creative home for new voices and create a vibrant community of writers, directors, actors, producers, and designers. Inspired by the counterculture movement, Naked Angels sought to break out of convention and challenge societal norms through their thought-provoking and dynamic theatrical productions.
Over the years, Naked Angels has evolved and adapted to the changing landscape of the arts. While initially operating as a company-led organization, the brand later transitioned to have a single Artistic Director at the helm. This shift allowed them to focus on targeted programs that foster community building and provide platforms for emerging, professional, and student writers to develop their craft.
Their programs, including Tuesdays@9, 1st Mondays, and 3T Writing Workshops for youth, are free and open to all, attracting individuals with diverse stories and perspectives. Naked Angels is committed to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and access, as seen in their staffing, outreach to artists, and partnerships with public schools, foster care programs, and the incarcerated population. Throughout their history, Naked Angels has played a pivotal role in the development of groundbreaking work, from small downtown dives to major Off-Broadway and Broadway productions.
Their unwavering commitment to dynamic storytelling and supporting artists with a communal spirit remains at the core of their mission. Located in New York City, Naked Angels continues to be a vital and dynamic force in the theater world, constantly learning and improving in their pursuit of artistic excellence and creative expression.
