NAL is a neuroimaging research laboratory led by Principal Investigator Dr. Mohamad Habes. The team investigates brain health, aging, and neurological disease using advanced MRI, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Its work includes studying Alzheimer’s disease, type 1 diabetes, cerebral small vessel disease, brain lesions, and the effects of conditions such as hypertension and COVID-19 on the brain.
The lab develops and applies computational methods to analyze brain scans, detect features such as white matter hyperintensities and cerebral microbleeds, estimate brain age, and examine disease patterns. Its research draws on large cohort studies, including the DCCT/EDIC, MESA, and CHARGE projects, and addresses variation across people and imaging sites. Findings are shared through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, workshops, and media interviews.
