National Black Theatre (NBT) is a pioneering brand in the world of theater. Established in 1968 by Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, an acclaimed performer and visionary entrepreneur, NBT holds the distinction of being the first revenue-generating Black art complex in the United States.
As the longest-running Black theater in New York City and one of the nation's oldest theaters operated by a woman of color, NBT has a rich history and a profound impact on African American cultural identity. NBT's core mission is to produce transformative theater that authentically represents the multifaceted Black experience. Their productions educate, enrich, empower, entertain, and inform the national consciousness on social justice issues affecting communities.
With over five decades of dedication to their craft, NBT has become a premier producer of theater that resonates with audiences. In 2023, NBT achieved a milestone by making its Broadway debut with the production of FAT HAM, becoming the third Black theater company in history to do so. Additionally, NBT's commitment to preserving and celebrating Black artistic heritage is evident in their acquisition of the largest collection of Nigerian New Sacred Art in the Western Hemisphere.
The brand also boasts inclusion in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. By centering Blackness, NBT continues to shape the cultural landscape and redefine the boundaries of theater.
