Nationale Bijentelling is a vital initiative focused on the conservation of wild bees in the Netherlands, running annually from April 15 to 25. This collaborative project, organized by Naturalis Biodiversity Center, IVN Natuureducatie, and LandschappenNL, encourages citizens to participate in counting bees, bumblebees, and hoverflies in their gardens. With nearly 360 bee species in the country—over half of which are threatened—this effort aims to track population trends and enhance public awareness of the importance of these pollinators.
The initiative provides participants with easy access to counting resources, including identification guides and telformulieren (counting forms), making it accessible for all, even those with minimal bee knowledge. In 2024, more than 3,700 participants counted over 75,000 bees, contributing significantly to vital research data. By engaging the community, Nationale Bijentelling not only seeks to protect these essential insects but also fosters a deeper understanding of biodiversity within local ecosystems.
